Early Childhood and School Readiness: Creating a Community Where All Children Thrive by Five

2013 Study

The “Thrive by Five” study explored the early childhood landscape in Onondaga County to assess the concerns and challenges, and consider how we might more effectively deploy our existing resources toward the goal that all children enter school ready to learn. The Study Committee concluded that we must shift our focus to the earliest years as the optimal time to invest in young children and their families to improve health, well-being and academic outcomes throughout the lifespan.

Our capacity—as a community, a region, and a nation—to successfully meet the challenges of the future world economy will depend on our ability to develop a highly skilled and adaptable workforce. The capacity of individuals to successfully meet the challenges of the future will require them to develop reasoning, creativity, and the ability to build and manage human relationships with people unlike themselves. To prepare students for the future we must be willing to challenge the assumptions about education we once accepted and embraced.  Themes that emerged during the study led to the development of specific recommendations in three categories: for community involvement, for the improvement of teaching, and for the improvement of student learning.

Declining School Enrollment: Opportunities for Cooperative Adaptations

This study focuses on declining enrollment at the secondary level, and provides an analysis, explanation and description of national, regional and county enrollment trends. OCL identifies problems that school districts face in a period of contraction and makes other general conclusion. Recommendations are made based on these conclusions and findings.
