ONONDAGA CITIZENS LEAGUE NEWS
FEBRUARY 2008

Welcome to the new look of OCL. This year we have a new web address and a new look for our web site: onondagacitizensleague.org. Check back frequently for updates on upcoming events and current studies. Our 2006-2007 Annual Report highlights some of last year's accomplishments.

In 2008 OCL will weigh in on "Rethinking I-81," that is, what will replace the Interstate 81, which is nearing the end of its useful life, between the I-481 interchanges north and south of Syracuse? While transportation planners and engineers study the traffic, structural and technical issues, the OCL study will focus its attention on the social, cultural, and economic effects of possible alternatives. If you would like to serve on the study committee, contact OCL at ocl@syr.edu.

The Government Consolidation Transition Team for County Executive Joanie Mahoney included former OCL board president Larry Bousquet, chair of the 2005 OCL report "Strategic Government Consolidation," which was cited by both candidates during the 2007 election campaign. Task Group completed its work and presented its report in December. Task force chair Vito Sciscioli is executive director of our partner in the 2005 study, Syracuse 20/20, which is taking the lead on a grassroots effort to modernize government.

OCL's Downtown Living Tour was a huge success, attracting nearly 2,000 people to view a dozen unique apartments, lofts, and condominiums through "Central New York's Next Great Neighborhood" on a beautifully sunny, breezy day in May. The Downtown Committee of Syracuse will take the lead in organizing this year's event, scheduled for May 17, 2008.

2008 marks a milestone for OCL—our 30th anniversary of promoting understanding of critical community issues and promoting change! Look for more commemorating our thirtieth throughout the year.
