HOW INEQUALITY MAKES US SICK: The Growing Disparities in Health and Health Care, OCL's just-released report, describes a growing national awareness of the extent of health disparities in this country, and the fact that the higher incidence of ill health among racial minorities, the poor and middle class is very much related to social factors such as income, education, work and neighborhood environments. The report reflects the complexity of the issue, the local implications, and the efforts underway to address some of the problems. On May 15, the Physician Assistant Studies program @ Le Moyne College will host a Forum on Community Responses to Health Care Disparities from 6:30-8:30 PM in Grewen Auditorium on campus. A panel of local activists and experts will explore the problems and plans to address these serious issues. Among the panel members will be Betty DeFazio, OCL Study Chair, Andres Kwon, Lead Organizer for the Health Care Task Force of ACTS (Alliance of Communities Transforming Syracuse), which has organized a coalition to address the concern for uninsured children; Cynthia Morrow MD, Commissioner of Health for Onondaga County, whose department offers various programs for the underserved; Dr. Beth-Lynn Satterly, Medical Director for Amaus Clinic, free medical care provided at the Cathedral downtown; and Liz Crockett, leader with Health Literacy Network convened by REACH CNY. For more information, contact Peter Sarver, 445 5439 or sarverpf@lemoyne.edu.
RETHINKING I-81, OCL’s current study, progresses as the Study Committee heard from Bill Egloff, of NYS Department of Transportation on the current state of the I-81 viaduct and from Jim D’Agostino and Nell Donaldson of the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council on The University Hill Transportation Study. The Committee also considered the Park East Freeway removal in Milwaukee, WI and the removal of the Embarcadero Freeway in San Francisco. Study Committee sessions will continue through the summer.
