OCL 2007 Civic Education Award

Kathy DeForge, Social Studies Department Chair at Marcellus Central Schools
Receives Civic Education Award at the OCL Annual Meeting

The sixth annual Levi L. Smith Civic Education Award was presented to Kathy DeForge, Social Studies Department Chair at Marcellus Central Schools, at the OCL annual meeting on June 13, 2007.

The award is given each year to honor an outstanding citizen or organization that has contributed to the field and practice of civic education in Central New York. Past winners include award namesake Levi Smith, The Post-Standard, and WCNY.

Ms. DeForge was selected as recipient of this year’s award for her commitment and promotion of Civic Education. As the department chair at Marcellus Central Schools, Kathy and her colleagues strive to educate well-informed citizens by actively involving the Marcellus students in the process of self-governance.  Their efforts make the school district’s mission “that each student will develop the responsibility, the confidence in his/her talents, and the knowledge necessary to function as a productive and contributing citizen in a diverse and changing world” a reality.
